Short definitions of the terms used on this website
| Accusative | Case of a noun that is the direct object of the sentence |
| Adjective | A word describing a noun |
| Article | Either the direct article "the" describing a particular object or person or the indirect article "a" or "an" describing an object or person in a less defined way. A type of determiner. |
| Case | A form taken by a noun depending on the function of the noun within a sentence. Can be nominative, accusative, dative or genitive |
| Dative | Case of a noun that is the indirect object of a sentence (usually) |
| Determiner | A word indicating the role of a noun. It may be an article ("the" or "a"), a demonstrative (e.g. "this", "some"), a possesive (e.g. "my", "your" etc) or an interrogative (e.g. "which"). |
| Gender | The gender of a noun can be masculine, feminine or neuter |
| Genitive | Case of a noun indicating possession (usually) |
| Nominative | Case of a noun that is the subject of the sentence |
| Noun | A word that names an object or person |
| Preposition | A small word that shows the relation of nouns to each other in a sentence (e.g. "in", "at", "under") |
| Verb | A word says what an object or person is doing |
